A coffee table anchors your living room, so getting the size right makes a big difference. Here are the simple rules designers use, and exactly how our natural stone coffee tables fit them.
Our coffee table sizes at a glance
- Block coffee table: 100 × 60 × 30 cm or 137 × 76 × 30 cm
- Waterfall coffee table: 100 × 55 × 35 cm
- Rounded coffee table: 90 cm diameter × 40 cm high
- Cube side table: 40 × 40 × 40 cm, used on its own or grouped as a coffee table
1. Length: about two-thirds of your sofa
As a rule of thumb, your coffee table should be roughly two-thirds the length of your sofa. Here's how that works with our sizes:
- Sofa around 1.5 to 1.8 m (two-seater or compact three-seater): the 100 cm Block or Waterfall table is the right fit.
- Sofa around 2 to 2.4 m (full three-seater): go for the 137 × 76 cm Block table. It holds its own in front of a larger sofa without crowding the room.
- Modular or L-shaped sofa: the 137 cm Block table suits a large modular. In a corner arrangement, the 90 cm Rounded table is easy to reach from every seat and easy to walk around.
2. Height: match your sofa
A coffee table usually sits level with your sofa seat or a little lower. Most sofa seats are around 40 to 45 cm high.
- 30 cm (Block tables): low and relaxed. Perfect with low, deep or modular sofas, and the most contemporary look.
- 35 cm (Waterfall tables): a middle ground that suits most sofas.
- 40 cm (Rounded tables): the best match for standard or higher sofas, and the easiest to reach a drink from.
3. Depth and walking space
Leave about 40 to 50 cm between the sofa and the table: close enough to reach a drink, with room for legs. If your living room is narrow, the 60 cm deep Block or 55 cm deep Waterfall keeps the walkway clear. In a generous room, the 76 cm deep Block table gives you more surface for books and styling.
4. Shape: match the room
- Rectangular (Block, Waterfall) suits long sofas and rectangular rooms.
- Round (90 cm Rounded) softens a room full of straight lines and works well with sectional sofas and tighter spaces.
- Cubes are flexible. Two 40 cm cubes side by side make an 80 × 40 cm coffee table, and three in a row make 120 × 40 cm. Spread them out as side tables when you have guests.
5. Side tables
A side table should sit roughly level with your sofa arm. Our 40 cm cubes suit low-armed and modular sofas, while our 50 cm high side tables, such as the Waterfall and Round Cross, suit standard sofa arms and armchairs.
6. Think about visual weight
Solid stone has real presence. In a smaller room, a lighter stone like Carrara or travertine keeps things feeling open. In a large room, a darker or boldly veined stone like Nero Marquina or Rosso Levanto can hold its own.
A quick tip before you buy
Mark the table's footprint on the floor with painter's tape, for example 100 × 60 cm or 137 × 76 cm, and live with it for a day. It's the easiest way to check the size feels right.
