Natural stone furniture is made to last for generations. A little everyday care keeps a marble or travertine table looking its best. Here's everything you need to know.
Why marble and travertine need a little care
Marble and travertine are both calcium-based stones. That gives them their beauty, but it also means acidic liquids can react with the surface and leave a dull mark, known as etching. All our pieces are sealed, which helps resist staining. Sealing slows liquids from soaking in, but it doesn't make stone acid-proof.
Everyday care
- Use coasters and placemats under glasses, mugs and dishes, especially wine, juice, coffee and anything with citrus.
- Wipe spills promptly with a soft, damp cloth, then dry the surface.
- Clean with warm water and a soft cloth. If you need more, use a pH-neutral cleaner made for natural stone.
- Avoid harsh cleaners: no vinegar, lemon, bleach, ammonia, or abrasive powders or pads.
- Protect from heat and scratches: use trivets under hot dishes and felt pads under decor.
Resealing
Depending on use, most pieces benefit from resealing every 12 to 24 months. A simple test: put a few drops of water on the surface. If they bead, the seal is working. If they darken the stone after a few minutes, it's time to reseal with a quality stone sealer.
Travertine-specific tips
Travertine's natural pores are filled for furniture use. Over many years, a small pore can occasionally open up. This is normal for the stone and is easily refilled. Get in touch and we'll point you in the right direction.
Living with natural stone
Natural stone develops a gentle patina over time, and many people love that lived-in character. Small marks are part of the story of a genuine stone piece, not a flaw.
